Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen bringen etwas von der Zeit zurück, dem Zeitgeist der 70er/80er Jahre, als der eingemauerte Teil Berlins die toleranteste, aufgeschlossenste und musikalisch von AFN stark beeinflusste Zeit war. Wirtschaftlich ging es bergauf, leben und leben lassen war das Motto und ein happy feeling war in der Stadt, die jeden willkommen hiess. Der Druck auf Berlin durch Mauer und Stacheldraht erzeugte eine Art Gegenbewegung: Wir lassen uns nicht unterkriegen: Wir leben Jetzt! Neues ausprobieren, kennenlernen und aufeinander Zugehen. Vieles fand draußen statt, miteinander unternahm man etwas. Und Musik war immer ein wichtiger Teil davon. Und natürlich alles Amerikanische. Im Alliierten Museum sieht man, was an die Wand gemalt ist: Wir wollen unsere Amis zurück.

Somit ist Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen ein kulturelles Erbe und für Berlin und alle, die funkysoul mögen, eine Bereicherung.

Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen bring back something of the time, the zeitgeist of the 70s/80s, when the walled part of Berlin was the most tolerant, open-minded and musically strongly influenced by AFN. Economically things were looking up, live and let live was the motto and there was a happy feeling in the city that welcomed everyone. The pressure on Berlin from the Wall and barbed wire created a kind of counter-movement: We won’t let it get us down: We live now! Trying out new things, getting to know each other and approaching each other. A lot of things took place outside, people did things together. And music was always an important part of it. And of course everything American. At the Allied Museum, you can see what’s painted on the wall: we want our Amis back.

So Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen is a cultural heritage and an enrichment for Berlin and everyone who likes funkysoul.

Die Drei: Mike Russell Gitarre/Gesang, Sir Charles Williamson Bass und DiCarlo drums sind die solide Basis für die Band. Mike Russell resümiert über die letzte Show:

„Der Wert einer festen Gruppe, die um die Drei herum kreativ bleibt (plus denjenigen, der die Keyboards spielt), hat mich schon vor langer Zeit davon überzeugt, dass die Basisgruppe die Mühe wert ist. Das Erstaunliche ist, dass wir daran erinnert werden, dass es sich lohnt, wenn man eine großartige Leistung wie am Donnerstag erbringt.“

„Ich spiele Funk“, sagte Mike Russell zu MFA Kera, als sie sich zum ersten Mal trafen und sie ihn fragte, ob er Blues spiele. Funk ist schwarz und Funk ist wieder da, oder war nie wirklich weg. Auch wenn die Wurzeln verdeckt zu sein scheinen.
So viele Werbespots auch in Deutschland benutzen Funk, um Gefühle zu wecken. Aber die jungen Leute auf den Konzerten starren uns an, als ob sie es nicht verstehen könnten, als ob sie es hören und nach der Verbindung suchen. Aber plötzlich fangen sie an, sich zu bewegen und zu grooven.
Das ist es, was es ist.

Der Versuch, etwas Kluges oder Tiefgründiges über The Funk als Einleitung zu einem solch monumentalen Werk zu sagen, ist eine Aufgabe, die besser jemand anderem als mir selbst zukommt. Funk ist etwas, das man fühlt, und jeder hat die Fähigkeit, es zu fühlen. Das ist die Ironie: Je mehr man darüber nachdenkt, desto schwieriger ist es, The Funk zu begreifen. Es ist einfach geschehen.. …
Die Beständigkeit von The Funk kann nicht geleugnet werden; die Musik hat etwas, das generationenübergreifend und multikulturell anspricht.

„I play funk,“ Mike Russell told MFA Kera when they first met and she asked him if he played blues. Funk is black and funk is back, or was never really gone. Although the roots seem to be covered up.
So many commercials also in Germany use funk to wake your feelings. But young people at the concerts stare at us as if they can’t get it, as if they hear it and search for the connection. But suddenly they start moving and grooving.
That’s what it is.

Trying to come up with something clever or deep to say about The Funk as an introduction to such an monumental work is an assignment better suited to someone other than myself. Funk is something that one feels, and everybody has the ability to feel it. The irony is: The more one thinks about it, the harder it is to get the fell of The Funk. It’s just done. …The staying power of The Funk can’t be denied; something about the music provides a cross-generational and multicultural appeal.

Die Musik, die in meinem Haus als Kind gespielt wurde, ist immer noch in mir. Mein Cousin „Bernhard“ war mein Kindheitsheld, der in „Deutschland“ war …, nicht ahnend, dass ich Jahrzehnte in meiner Wahlheimat „Berlin“ verbringen würde.

Ja, in der Tat! Ich habe vor vielen Jahren als Teenager ein Album von „Eddie Harris„, der „Jazz-Funk-Legende“, zum Geburtstag geschenkt bekommen und seine Musik in mich aufgesogen, um mich dann 1989 mit ihm auf der Bühne des „legendären“ „Quasimodo“ wiederzufinden. Dies war der Beginn einer langen Zusammenarbeit mit dem Club, zu der auch Auftritte mit der „Michael Jackson Memorial Band“ und vielen anderen gehörten, die nun schon 30 Jahre andauern.


Ich glaube, dass das Schicksal manchmal so arbeitet! Die Musik, die in meinem Haus als Kind gespielt wurde, ist immer noch in mir. Mein Cousin „Bernhard“ war mein Kindheitsheld, der in „Deutschland“ war (sein Bild in seiner Militäruniform hing in meinem Zimmer), nicht ahnend, dass ich Jahrzehnte in meiner Wahlheimat „Berlin“ verbringen würde. Das könnte Schicksal sein!

Yes indeed! I received a album as a birthday present many years ago as a teenager „Eddie Harris“ the „jazz funk legend“ and absorbed his music only to find myself on stage with him in 1989 at the „legendary“ „Quasimodo„. This is the beginning of a long association with the club which have included shows with „Michael Jackson memorial Band“ and many others now stretching 30 years.

I believe that fate works sometimes like that! The music that was playing in my house as a child is still inside me. My cousin „Bernhard“ was my childhood hero who was in „Germany“ (his picture in his military uniform hung in my room) not realizing that I would spend decades in my adopted home „Berlin“. This might be fate!

Passend zur Quasimodo Funk Nights erinnern wir an die CD „Mike Russell’s Funky Soul Kitchen The Quasimodo Concerts„, die ganz einfach bei amazon zu bestellen und zu hören ist. Die CD wurde im Mai 2017 veröffentlicht und wurde live mitgeschnitten. Empfehlenswert.

Inzwischen ist die Band weiter fortgeschritten und hat den typischen Funky Soul Kitchen-Sound mehr und mehr vollendet.
